A Hitachi subsidiary has agreed to a $31m fine for its role in an industry-wide conspiracy to fix the prices of monitors sold to computer and handset manufacturers.

Tuesday's guilty plea by Hitachi Displays came the same day the US Justice Department filed a one-count indictment that claimed the Japanese monitor maker actively sought to drive up the price of thin film transistor liquid crystal display monitors sold to Dell. The company admitted its officials attended "bilateral meetings" to discuss and agree upon prices of LCD monitors sold to Dell.

Dell's Super Slim LCD Monitor

As Dell looks to reposition itself in the market and seek out new niches, one very promising showcase item is their Super Slim Display Port.  Dell says this monitor can get 4x HDTV resolution and it is coming this year.  Who knew Dell could be this cool?

Not merely a wispy monitor, Dell incorporates audio, microphone, video, and other peripherals into one bi-directional cable.  By reducing the amount of converters, Dell can achieve the 1/2” panel depth.  Expect Dell to work this technology into Laptops as well.

The Samsung 192B LCD monitor offer great color quality and a wide viewing angle. In terms of display quality this 19" LCD is one of the best. Coupled with it's reasonable price this model makes a lot of sense.

Some LCD monitor buyers will be turned off at the lack of DVI port for digital connectivity and rightly so. Most graphics cards these days supprt a DVI out and seems like a glaring omission by Samsung. However the differences between digital and analog are much less apparent at the native resolution of this monitor and I you won't notice the difference with anything less than a side by side comparison.
